What is Remedial massage?

Remedial massage is a therapy that manipulates the soft tissues of the body to provide an effective healing treatment. Therapists use relevant techniques and movements depending on their client’s needs. This type of massage aims to treat impaired, knotted, tense or immobile parts of the body that cause aches and can eventually lead to injury. Remedial massage may involve deep tissue work to enhance mobility and overall health.

How does it Work

Remedial massage works by mobilising tense and knotted muscles to allow better circulation and freedom of movement. It also releases fascia to allow muscles to have their natural range of motion and release emotional tension. One of the aims of treatment is to stimulate the body to do its own healing. It has a positive effect on various systems of your body, including:

  • Circulatory and Lymphatic Systems:
Encourages blood flow to the tissue being treated therefore promoting a reduction in pain and swelling by improving lymphatic flow.
  • Muscular:
Enables a great stretch on tight and overused muscles. This reduces muscle spasms and cramping.
  • Endocrine/Hormonal:
Reduces levels of cortisol, which is a stress hormone. Can increase levels of serotonin and dopamine, which are hormones that improve mood and reduce anxiety. This can have a positive effect on your sleeping pattern and energy levels.
  • Joints:
Assists in increasing joint range of motion by working on the surrounding muscles. If the muscles are relaxed, the joints that connect to those muscles also relax!

Does it hurt?

A remedial massage therapist may use a series of manual manipulation that may or may not be firm and forceful. This may not necessarily cause pain, however in very acute injuries, you may experience some tenderness during the treatment. This is usually followed by a lot of relief post-treatment. It is important to remember, trigger points (sore spots) can also take time to release down to the level needed to be effective.

What is the best timing for a Remedial massage?

This depends on the type of pain or condition you are experiencing. Generally, more chronic or long-standing pain can be treated at any time and benefit from regular visits to the massage therapist. With a more acute or recent injury, it is best to wait until swelling has reduced. This can take from 72 hours to 2 weeks after the initial injury. It is best to contact your therapist and discuss with them what is best for you.

How long should I book for a Remedial massage?
