What is Psychology?

Psychology is the scientific study of the brain and human behaviour. The aim of the discipline is to understand how and why we do things as individuals and as groups. Through scientific experimentation and research, information can be gathered over time to help piece together the puzzle that is the human being and its behaviours.

What can Psychologists treat?

It is a common misconception that only people with serious mental illness should consider seeing a psychologist. This view is not only untrue but also stops many people who may benefit from seeing a psychologist from actually consulting one. A Psychologist is an allied health professional whose main job is to help facilitate the change that any person may need to make in their life to lead a happier, healthier and more fulfilling existence.

  • A psychologist will see and treat people with the following issues:
  • Family and/or relationship issues
  • Any range of stress, anxiety and/or depression disorders
  • Phobias including social phobia
  • Eating disorders as well as obesity and weight management
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Grief and loss
  • Personality disorders such as bi-polar, borderline personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder to name a few
  • Children and adults with ADD or ADHD
  • Chronic pain and injury management
  • Palliative care and terminal illness

If you feel that things are not going right for you and you are not quite sure how to get things back on track it is worth consulting with a psychologist to see if they can help you better cope and manage the challenges that life throws at you.
